Overview

From a big dog to a small cat, air travel always means excitement and uncertainty for both the owners and their four-legged friends. With Lufthansa Cargo, animals travel under the optimal conditions. Can pets be transported on all flights?
Generally, yes. However, there are restrictions depending on the aircraft type on certain routes, the facilities available at the destination airport, the flight date (weekend restrictions may apply), or weather conditions at the departure and/or destination airport.
Extreme weather conditions or legal regulations may restrict the transport of pets. Dogs belonging to brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds have anatomically narrowed airways and are therefore prone to breathing difficulties. Stress caused by transport, and especially high temperatures at the departure or destination airport, can lead to circulatory problems and increased breathing distress. For this reason, Lufthansa Cargo imposes transport restrictions on certain breeds when temperatures are high at the departure or destination airport.
Important documents include a valid health certificate, vaccination records (e.g., rabies vaccination), possibly an EU pet passport, and, depending on the country, import permits. Some countries also require quarantine or microchip documentation.

Unfortunately, direct bookings by private customers are not possible. Lufthansa Cargo works with freight forwarders who specialize in the transport of live animals. These forwarders must meet certain requirements and be registered for the booking of live animals.
